Place potatoes in a medium-sized pot filled with enough cold water to cover them. Bring to a boil. Reduce to a rolling simmer and cook for 10 minutes.
When you can insert a fork into the potatoes and it comes out easily, drain them and retain some of the cooking liquid in the pot, about ¼ cup. Return the drained potatoes to the pot and add butter, spice and cream.
Mash with a potato masher until smooth. Taste and add more butter, milk/cream, or salt to taste. Serve hot.
